Space for a defined period
A temporary office can be useful when the main workspace is unavailable during building work. On a project site, a cabin may provide room for administration or meetings close to the work taking place.
Hire allows the requirement to be discussed around an expected start and finish. However, an uncertain programme still needs attention. Ask how a possible extension or earlier completion would affect the arrangements.
Compare the complete cost
Hire and purchase are different decisions. For a short project, hiring avoids purchasing a cabin for a requirement that may end, but the overall comparison still depends on the proposed terms and associated work.
Consider the following when reviewing a proposal:
- The cabin hire period and what is included.
- Transport, positioning and collection.
- Site preparation and connection work.
- Furniture and other specified equipment.
- Running costs and maintenance responsibilities.
There is no useful universal saving figure. Existing space may be the better option where the temporary requirement is small or delivery access is difficult.
Adapt the layout to the activity
Desks, meeting furniture and storage compete for floor space. A layout that suits administration may not suit training sessions or regular visitor meetings.
Connected modular buildings are a different scope from hiring a single cabin. If you need several rooms or linked units, describe that requirement specifically. Do not assume individual cabins can be connected or expanded without further design and site consideration.
Comfort, security and ongoing use
Ask which heating, lighting and ventilation features form part of the proposed specification. For security, discuss doors, windows and access arrangements rather than treating the word “secure” as a complete description.
Report existing-unit problems through the relevant hire arrangements. Maintenance and repair responsibilities should be established separately from the initial layout decision.
Keep welfare and transport in view
Staff facilities need their own specification. Our welfare units page covers the facilities and site services to describe.
Transport also remains part of the project, including the eventual removal of the cabin. Changes to site access during the hire period can affect the collection plan.
